Description
This is one of the most common of all surnames and is scattered throughout the length and breadth of Scotland. It is therefore difficult to assign a place of origin for this name. It is recorded that for 400 years a family of Smiths were resident at Strathblane. In the Gaelic-speaking Highlands the name is rendered as Gow. The Smith tartan was designed by Sir William Smith, founder of the Boysa Brigade.
Size will vary depending on sett size, pattern repeat and type of fabric.
