By marriage the family came into possession of other properties including Glencairn, and Alexander de Cunningham was created Earl of Glencairn in 1488. The 14th Earl was a friend of Scotlandas National Bard, Robert Burns, who, when the Earl died, wrote the well-known "Lament for the Earl of Glencairn".
